Earth Hour ::: A Symbol to Flip the Switch to Clean Energy

March 27th, 8:30, wherever you are, is an hour to turn the lights off to join millions of people around the world in making a statement about the urgency of climate change. For all of you naysayers- even IF the greenhouse gasses we produce are not causing climate change, they still have very significant impacts on human health in the form of diseases such as asthma. These diseases create suffering and financial costs for individuals. When pollution affects the poor- as it often does, because who wants to live next to a factory? “not I,” says the person with the financial means to buy a home elsewhere- the cost must be paid by somebody, such as the hospital, insurance company, or government. So even IF greenhouses gases weren’t causing climate change, it is still a proper move to reduce pollution for the health of our people and to decrease the costs on the rest of society.

So, you can join in and switch the lights off for an hour. When was the last time you looked at the stars? Painted bodies with latex paint by candlelight? Made s’mores in a burn barrel on your rooftop? The point of earth hour is for each one to teach one about climate change and the deleterious effects of our dependency on oil as our main energy source, and to join in with an event being celebrated worldwide by switchin’ ’em off. No, they aren’t paying me to say this. I’m saying it because *i care* and I think you do too. Why not have fun and be part of a worldwide event at the same time? Next Friday, 8:30pm, wherever you are.

    That’s a really moving video.
I think I’m going to get a bunch of people together to celebrate this day/hour, and instead be outdoors by candle light. Thanks for the reminder and heads up!

  2. Oh yea, and March 27th is Saturday, not Friday. 😉
